East African Whale Shark
Author: admin

Whale sharks, the world’s largest fish, can weigh 20 tons and grow to 60 feet. But it takes only a four-inch gap in a nylon fishing net to entangle a whale shark’s fin, which can lead to its death. In the southern Kenya resort town of Diani Beach, the East African Whale Shark Trust is working to phase out the use of theese nets in favor of safer fishing methods, to educate residents and tourists about the sharks, and to build an international whale shark database.

We are going to Kenya November 1st and need some help on how to dress and what to bring. We are going to the following locations: Masai Mara, foothills of Kilimanjaro, Meru National Park.
Africa in general is hot, but the areas you are going to are all very temperate (not super hot) because they are at altitude. So it will probably be between about 60 and 85 degrees. It will also be the warmest part of the year, because it’s the Southern hemisphere, and it may be raining in some of the places as well. For these reasons, you should bring things for layering, as it will get chilly in the evenings and warm during the day. So everything from short-sleeved shirts to a fleece jacket is good and needed. Warm shoes (sneakers or hiking boots), full-length trousers, a sun hat are all good. And lots of sun block, because even though it’s not incredibly hot, you are still extremely close to the equator.
Try and get a flight into Nairobi, Kenya. The Serena Hotel is really good. Then, you can book safari drives in the Masai Mara, Nakuru, Naivasha. Mombasa, Kenya is also very nice.
Bird Watching in Kenya

East Africa is one of the world’s richest birding areas - colorful coastal regions, woodlands, endless open plains and lakes in the Great Rift Valley. In all of Africa Kenya has the best birding sites.
When you go to safari in Kenya, you are likely to spot more than 350 bird species. Almost 1,100 have been recorded in the different habitats - coastal, savanna, highlands and wetlands.
The lakes within Kenya’s Great Rift Valley are a home of pink flamingos, plover, marabou storks and herons. Safaris with a specific focus on birds are not unusual. They are educational expeditions and are led by ornithologists. They include remote regions such as Kakamega Forest National Reserve where blue touracos and hornbills live.
Bird lovers can also find avian beauties in Botswana’s Okavango River Delta.
