Africa Vacation

No matter what you are looking for, an Africa vacation can fulfill all your trip desires.

Africa is a land of jungles and wild animals and the first thing you may want to consider doing is safari, which will take you to places that most people have only dreamed about. Imagine lions in the wild; elephants hanging out in your lodge back yard; monkeys playing on your terrace! Only in Africa.

Being on a safari does not mean living like an “animal”. Throughout the numerous national parks you’ll visit, you will see nature at its best, but also you’ll have a chance to see some of the finest accommodations in the world. You can stay in lodges that rival anything in the cosmopolitan areas for luxury and service.

However, the jungles and savannas of Africa is only part of the picture. In South Africa, you can find hotels and resorts that can compete with Las Vegas or any other showplace resorts - top line entertainment, casino gambling, unsurpassed beaches.

In the north, beautiful beach resorts dot the Mediterranean coast as well as the Red Sea.

Africa has countless island resorts on the Indian Ocean too. An Africa vacation there could be a private bungalow at a small resort where the water is pristine and unspoiled, perfect for diving and sailing.

In the north west, Morocco and the Canary Islands have a completely different atmosphere and culture to experience. You might feel that you are in Monte Carlo but with more relaxing style.

An Africa vacation can be just about anything you want it to be since Africa is probably the most diverse continent on the planet with a variety that you will not find anywhere else.

Known as the “land of thousand hills” Rwanda was the backdrop of one of the most chilling and tragic chapters of recent history. Having spent the past decade rebuilding, Rwanda is now characterized by resilience and promise. Discover the sites of its thriving capital city Kigali. Visit a local market, meet artisans at a potery project and get a taste of local culture at the Franco-Rwandan Cultural Centre. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. Stop in at the Hotel des Mille Cillines - made famous by the movie Hotel Rwanda - on the way to the Virunga Mountains.

Spend a day tracking gorillas in the forested hills of the Parc National des Volcans in the lush Virunga Mountains of Rwanda and observe their behavior at close range. Follow local guides through thick undergrowth and dangling vines in search of gorilla families. Once you find them, sit among these gentle giants, observing their interactions, listening to their distinctive grumbles and viewing one of the planets most endangered creatures from an aweinspiring, up close perspective. At the Karisoke Research Center learn about current gorilla studies and conservation efforts.

You can also strike out into the lower reaches of the Parc National des Volcans and lookout for golden monkeys, a distinct species of primate that can often be found in thick bamboo stands.

Safari In Tanzania

Set out on a wildlife safari amid the incredible diversity of landscapes in Tanzania’s most famous game parks: Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. Visit the Olduvai George where on expedition in 1960, Homo habilis, regarded as one of the earliest members of the human genus was discovered. Four decades later, in 1999 a 3.5-million-year-old skull and partial jaw believed to belong to a new branch of early hominid was also found discoveries that have shaped our understanding of human origins.

Lake Manyara National Park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes and flamingos.

Ngorongoro crater is 2,000 feet deep and its volcanic slopes shelter almost 30,000 animals. You may see elephants, rhinos, buffalo, cheetahs, lions, hyenas, hippos, wildebeests as well as a variety of birds and ungulates. Crater floor is sprinkled with watering holes and the crater is a volcanic caldera that spans an area more than 100 square miles.

You can witness the great annual wildebeest migration in the Serengeti National Park. Embark on an early morning game drive to view wildlife at one of their most active times of the day. Look for herds of zebra or wildebeest eyeing a predator warily and spot crocodiles as their snouts surface in the Grumeti River. Or take in a birds-eye view of the plains on hot-air baloon ride.

The Fetu Afahye - harvest festival of the Fetu people, gathers momentum after a period of ritual silence. The Omanhene - head chief, meditates in isolation for a week; drums are prohibited and fishing is banned in the Foso lagoon. But at the end of August a series of celebrations, including a regatta, the ceremonial reopening of the lagoon, bonfires and a cow sacrifice breaks the calm.

The partying climaxes on the first Saturday of September. Decked out in their finery, local chiefs parade through town, carried on brightly decorated litters and followed by elaborately dressed warrior groups known as Asafo Companies.

I haven’t seen any African country yet and I have two very young children 1 and 5. Is there a child friendly vacation spot anywhere there? Safari seems too rough for young children (and boring for a 1.5 year old) and Egypt seems so dangerous.

Actually my sister and I went to Egypt right after september 11th with her then 2 year old son. He loved it and everyone was so nice, there was so much to do there and so much to learn. He loved viewing the mummies in the egyptian museum and we also camped in the desert where he played in the sand with his mummy action figures for hours. An african safari would be so amusing as well, and very educational. There’s not much a 1 and 1\2 year old will remember anyways, but some beautiful natural terrain and large animals would be great to remember.
